PS3, Bravia Sync and Anynet: HDMI CEC

HDMI CEC,  otherwise known as Consumer Electronics Control (CEC), is a one-wire bidirectional serial bus that uses the industry-standard AV.link protocol to perform remote control functions.  CEC is a feature designed to allow the user to command and control multiple CEC enabled equipment with one remote control and allow CEC enabled devices to command and control each other without user intervention. Source.

Sony's Bravia Sync is merely CEC renamed and yes, most electronics manufactures do indeed rename this ability.  Samsung for instance call this feature Anynet+ and both Samsung and Sony infer you can only control your equipment with devices bearing only these "rebadged" names.  The Sony website for instance claims:

The BRAVIA Sync function on this TV communicates with other Sony equipment supporting the Control for HDMI function.

Ok lets test these claims with 3 independent HDMI CEC capable devices.

How about we try controlling a PS3 with Bravia Sync enabled via a Samsung series 6 remote control.  To further emphasise generic CEC capability, these two devices are all connected with a Denon CEC capable AV receiver.

I apologise about the roughness of this video, it was quickly made to prove a point in a (probably drunken) discussion.  The generic Samsung remote in this vid is able to navigate and launch a Blu-ray on a PS3 Slim, adjust seeking forward and reverse, pausing and quitting PS3 playback with the added benefit of being able to adjust the volume levels on a Denon AVR.

I must admit that with some devices, button mapping may vary slightly due to the insane amount of remote control layouts available.  Give it a try and see what combination of HDMI CEC devices work for you.

My samsung TV does not recognize my denon avr 591. It DOES recognize my sony blu-ray, which is wired through the avr via HMDI. I’d like to use the Anynet for the Denon AVR as well. Any tips on how to have the anynet connect to the denon? Thanks!
